Each February, the Career and Technical Education community celebrates CTE Month, to raise awareness of the role that CTE has in preparing students for careers and college. CTE Month is also a time to recognize and celebrate CTE achievements and accomplishments nationwide. Char-Em ISD offers 42 CTE programs (with duplication) throughout the 11 public school districts of Northwest Michigan. Char-Em's staff members, including specialists and consultants, work every day alongside teachers in the public schools to bring Career and Technical Education to all students wishing to participate. It is the vision of Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District to be an indispensable part of every local school district it serves.
Char-Em ISD is proud to have achieved accreditation by AdvancED for a second 5-year period effective July 2016. The AdvancED Accreditation Commission determined that Char-Em ISD engages in a continuous systemic process of improvement, and has effective and efficient quality assurance controls throughout the system. This achievement recognizes the quality of services provided by the ISD through the leadership team and governing authority, the dedication and service of the professional staff, and the support of community stakeholders.
Char-Em ISD and local school employees are invited to attend a free seminar on pensions, hosted by Char-Em and the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARSP). Two sessions are intended to help you understand new laws and how they will affect you, and also help you to determine when you can afford to retire. There are two sessions on Wednesday, Feb 28: 4 p.m. for "Pension 201" and 6 p.m. for "Pension 301." Details about the differences in the sessions can be found in the accompanying flyer. The seminars will take place at the Charlevoix Char-Em location. Registration is required.
Early Saturday mornings are typically fairly quiet in a high school gymnasium, but that was not the case on Dec. 16, 2017, when approximately 30 students, teachers, parents and volunteers came together at Central Lake High School to help a special little boy get his own set of wheels. The effort was part of the Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District’s involvement with the national Go Baby Go! program. This is the second year that Char-Em ISD has led a build for children under age 5, and the second year also that the Petoskey High School Paladins robotics team has volunteered its time and talents to help. On Saturday, the robotics students, ISD staff and volunteers began customizing a small toy car to help 21-month-old Jeremiah Nelson, of Central Lake, be able to motor himself around for the first time. Jeremiah was born with spina bifida, which means he is unable to crawl or walk, and has limited mobility on his right side.
The highest number of teams ever – 18 -- competed at North Central Michigan College in the second Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District Quiz Bowl tournament of the season. The Petoskey A team went on to win the overall championship by beating Ellsworth A in the final match.
The Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District currently has several job openings. The openings are for: Senior Accountant; Union Transporter; and substitute transporter and rider.
A new initiative by the Special Education team is pairing students and young adults with special needs with businesses and organizations for meaningful employment opportunities.
